What does everyone here think about covers of TMBG songs? I think I read on the wiki once that there's some sort of tribute album with famous or semi-famous singers, but I've never heard any of them.
Anyway, I usually stay away from TMBG covers. In fact, I don't know that I've ever heard one until today. I was curious and wanted to hear a female voice singing a TMBG song or two, and I found a video of a girl on YouTube singing Experimental Film. I liked it quite a lot. I still love the original more than I could a cover, of course, but it was nice.
I don't know that I'll make a habit of listening to covers, though. I have this thing about almost always loving an original of something and not wanting it to be messed with. Even if that original is not THE original. If it's the first version I experienced, I'm probably going to favor it. (Examples -- the version of Where Your Eyes Don't Go on podcast 33A; the Joshua Fried remix of The World's Address; and [to give an example of something completely unrelated to TMBG] the 2003 made for TV movie version of The Music Man starring Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Broderick.)
Anyway, enough of my rambling. Does anyone here have an opinion on TMBG covers? Like them? Hate them? Have certain favorites? Have comments on them? Have no thoughts on the subject one way or another?
Gary has that album of covers. Some of them aren't bad. There is a song on it by Steve from Blues Clues. He sings Dead. It is amusing and not terrible.
Other than that I think the only cover I've heard is Jonathan Coulton and Paul and Storm doing Birdhouse at a show last year. It was fun but of course couldn't compare with the original.
OK Go used to do Kiss Me Son Of God but I never heard it. Gary did, back in their opening for TMBG days.
And I recently came across a YouTube video of a steel drum band playing Experimental Film which was pretty damn funny.
"So the room must listen to me [br]Filibuster vigilantly [br]My name is blue canary[br]One note spelled l-i-t-e."
Interesting! At first, I was thinking, "why is she trying to look nonchalant?" and then I realized that it's your channel. haha. I like "Mitochondria Are Creepy". :] And I KNOW I've been to your channel before because I remember reading your comments, but I don't remember why because I don't think I've ever seen any of your videos until now. Anyway, thanks for responding.

A cover of Birdhouse In Your Soul is what introduced me to the band in the first place! It was an excerpt of the song in a scene on the television show "Pushing Daisies" and featuring the voices of Ellen Greene and Kristin Chenoweth, and I adore it! I still prefer the TMBG version (a rare exception to my favoriting-the-first-version-I-heard rule) but this is a very, very close second.
Interesting! (I need to start using synonyms for this word, but I really am sincere in saying it.) I've never heard of either of those bands. Are they well-known? I think I prefer the latter's version of "Lazyhead And Sleepybones" best of all the ones I listened to. Thanks for the links :]
