Something Jamie said in another thread made me think of this..
Has anyone ever put together a chronology of when various people came and went from the backing band? First/last shows where known? Major recordings each individual appeared on?
The information on the wiki on band members past and present is pretty vague on their comings and goings. I think it would be helpful for the newer folks trying to get a handle on who was around when and it would certainly satisfy my curiosity about exact start and end dates for some of the band members.
But I don't know if specific enough information is even out there to put it together, if it doesn't already exist somewhere. It might end up relying heavily on live recordings to narrow down time frames if no one knows the answer.
Or maybe I'm the only one who really cares. Who knows?
Thoughts?

That sounds awesome. There's things like that on Wikipedia...
I'll make one when I have free time, because it sounds fun.

I was kinda thinking it could be a group forum project since I figured it would require some digging and research and group effort makes things go faster. But if you want to do it that's fine.

I started making this yesterday, but I'm very lazy and would never finish it ever, so for now you can all gawk at how ugly it is and maybe fill in some of the information if you're into that sort of thing. A lot of the stuff isn't blank because I didn't know but rather because I didn't feel like finding it. I completely dropped off before even reaching 2000-present. Alternately, because the format is ODD ODD ODD and the organisation is...poor, someone could start over from scratch, which would be an excellent idea. But the information here is generally acceptable. Sometimes. So maybe for general reference while someone else gets something together. Anyway, here it is, organised by TIME PERIOD (yes, really): 1982-1984 (approximated) Reel-to-reel
studio releases 1983 Demo Tape (maybe) 1984 Promo Demo 1984 Demo Tape
1985-1989 (approximated) Bill Krauss: Soundman Drum machine
studio releases of note Wiggle Diskette 1985 Promo Demo: includes tracks switched on by Bill Krauss! 1985 Demo Tape 1986 Demo Tape They Might Be Giants Lincoln
1990-early 1992
studio releases of note Flood (February 1990) Apollo 18 (March 1992)
springish 1992-1993 “They Might Be Giants have been touring as a full band since the Spring of 1992.” -wdtss? PR Brian Doherty: Oh my damn, it’s TMBG’s first ever drummer. First show with TMBG - Probably around 1993 (or ‘94) Releases with TMBG (92-93): WDTSS JD Feinberg: Oh my damn, it's TMBG's other first ever drummer. First show with TMBG - Almost certainly 16 June, 1992 (Don’t Tread on the Cut Up Snake) Last: Prooobably 6 December, 1992 Releases with TMBG: O Tannenbaum Tony Maimone: Played bass. First show with TMBG - Also 16 June, 1992 Releases with TMBG (92-93): WDTSS, O Tannenbaum Kurt Hoffman: Played sax, clarinet, and keyboards. First show with TMBG - Also 16 June, 1992 Releases with TMBG (92-93): WDTSS, O Tannenbaum Graham Maby: Played bass, too. But not live (yet). Frank London: Played the trumpet, but not live. Releases with TMBG: WDTSS
studio releases of note WDTSS? (September 1993): Maby, Hoffman, Doherty, London O Tannenbaum (November 1993): Feinberg, Maimone, Hoffman
1994-1999 Brian Doherty: Oh my damn, he’s still here Last show with TMBG: Late 90s Releases with TMBG: John Henry, Factory Showroom, STD, LTW First show with John Linnell: Last show with John Linnell: Dan Hickey: A guy named Dan who played the drums. First show with TMBG: Sometime in 1997 Last show with TMBG: Sometime in 2003 Danny Weinkauf: The bass (the bass) First show with TMBG: Releases with TMBG (9: Dan Miller: Guitar man, packaged with Weinkauf First show with TMBG: probably the same as Danny Releases with TMBG: Eric Schermerhorn: Played lead guitar, technically putting Flans in rhythm First show with TMBG: Last show with TMBG: Releases with TMBG (94-99): Factory Showroom, STD Releases with Mono Puff: It’s Fun to Steal
studio releases of note John Henry (September 1994): First TMBG album with a band, which was Doherty, Hoffman, and Maimone/Maby Factory Showroom (October 1996): It’s Fun to Steal (Mono Puff) (1998): Long Tall Weekend (July 1999):

I'll mess around with formatting later. I just want to get some rough dates in while I am looking them up so I don't forget.
JD Feinberg - I think you've got those fairly accurately, though do you have a reason to assume 12/6/92 was his last show rather than 12/31/92? Tony Maimone - 1992- 12/31/95 (I assume, since the next was reportedly Graham's first) Kurt Hoffman - 1992 - something mid 1994 I believe Brian Doherty - Is it safe to assume 4/21/93 since that was the first show of that year? - January 1997 (I assume 1/4/97) Graham Maby - 1/16/96 - 9/15/97 Eric Schermerhorn - I have no concept of Eric's dates and can't find anything more specific than 1996 Dan Hickey - Based on my assumed date of Brian's departure, I'm going with 2/7/97 - 12/30/03 (I think?) Hal Cragin - 10/10/97- Early May 1998 (that's a bit of a guess) Danny Weinkauf - Mid May 1998 (my guess would be 5/16/98) - present Dan Miller - 9/4/98 - present Jeremy Chatsky - 3/12/02- late May/ early June 2002 Marty Beller - This one's tricky since he started playing occasionally in 2003 (maybe March? not sure) I'd assume 1/12/04 for his official start date - present Frank Vilardi - 2/27/08- 3/14/08 (This is probably too short a stint to really count but I thought I'd note it anyway)
Mind you I could be completely off on any of those. Anyone with more information than I, please, correct me or fill in more specific info if you know it. Then we can go about integrating it with key releases and such.

Wowza. Just out of curiosity, have all of these people played on records, or have some of them played shows only? (Does that question make sense..?)

I believe that Marty's first show was 2/14/03 @ Joe's Pub, and he played all the instores and Joe's shows until replacing Dan in '04.

The only people on that list that are really truly "shows only" are Jeremy Chatzky and Frank Vilardi who filled in for Danny and Marty respectively while they were on paternity leave (and Jeremy was on P.S.O.K. so technically he was on a recording), and JD Feinberg as the only recording he appeared on was O Tannenbaum and it was recorded at a sound check for a show.
Everybody else was on a least one album.
Interesting, but useless trivia, (assuming nothing changes), by the time the band reaches it's 30th anniversary in 2012, Dan and Danny will have been playing with the band for half it's life time. And Marty only needs one more year to be the longest tenured drummer in the band's history (he's already there if you count the shows he played in '03).
